Southerners Triumphant at Inter-Club Comp

Meary Veg, 26 October

The second half of the 2024 Inter-Club was shot at Meary Veg this Saturday, and saw the home team lift the trophy after several hours of highly enjoyable competition.

English Skeet

Roman Sammer put in another strong performance for Meary Veg with just three targets missed and 47 kills, narrowly ahead of The Ayres’ Paul Mihailovits on 45 and Jeff Corkill with 44. Joe Faragher also scored a strong 44 on his return to the squad following man-flu a brief illness, but the real surprise was the overall score for Meary Veg: another 210 / 630, same as in round one.

Down the Line

The top of the DTL table also showed strong similarity to last week’s results, with Mike Walker leading the pack on 48 targets and 142 points, ahead of Stevie Craine and Phil Ward (47 / 139 both) and Alan Wade with 48 / 138. Overall The North was down on their DTL performance from last week, but so was The South – still everything to play for.

English Sporting

The first of five stands saw local boys Micheal Cross, Ben Stembridge and Mark Barnett claim 8 out of 10 targets while Nigel Moffat led the visitors side on 7, but by stand two The Ayres had found their stride, particularly Jack Kneen and John Taylor, who would dominate the next three stands and leave Meary Veg nipping at their heels.

An unexpected change in wind direction forced us to wait until the DTL had finished before stand five could be tackled, but this had the pleasant benefit of bringing both squads together on the top bank for a spot of banter and ‘encouragement’ while most of us missed a vicious 60 yard looper that only John Taylor cleaned to well-earned applause.

Following the ceremony a number of us stayed in the pub and reflected on the quality of the targets (?!) the success of the event, and on what can be achieved when two clubs share one passion. Our sincere thanks to the course setters, referees and markers – it’s your efforts which make events like this possible.
