Meary Veg, 29 March
The afternoon of Saturday 29th March found thirty competitors from both clubs battle it out at Meary Veg in challenging conditions, with high winds and driving rain making for some interesting targets. 50 clays each of Skeet and DTL were shot simultaneously on both ranges, and 50 Sporting followed a short break in order to make sure the targets remained fair in the building winds.
English Skeet
Junior Zack Bellhouse wasted no time in posting the highest Skeet score of the day in his first round with an impressive 24, while Meary Veg team mate James Simpson bagged 22. The Ayres’ Jamie Hancox and Jeff Corkill meanwhile scored 23 each in their first round.
Round two was dominated again by Bellhouse and Simpson with another 23 targets each, followed by Roman Sammer and The Ayres’ Paul Mihailovits on 22. The same four competitors topped our Skeet standings at the end of 50 very wet and variable targets, headed by Bellhouse on 47, Simpson on 45, and Mihailovits and Sammer level on 43.

Down the Line
Meary Veg’s Callum Craine made a strong start in his first round with 24 kills including one second barrel for an impressive 71 points, closely followed by The Ayres’ Arran Wade also on 24 but with two second barrels for 70 points. Ted Kermeen earned 67 points for Meary Veg with 23 and two second barrels, while team mate Rob Marshall brought home 66 via 23 and 3.
Round two found little change at the top of the leaderboard with Craine still forging ahead on 74 – just one second barrel away from a perfect round in perfectly miserable weather. Wade continued to nip at his heels with 72 points having missed just one target, while Kermeen also missed one and chased three down with his second barrel. The Ayres’ Ted Davis improved on his 62 point opening score by breaking 23 targets including three second barrels for 66 points.
The top scorers after 2 rounds of DTL were Callum Craine of 145 points, followed by Arran Wade on 142 and Ted Kermeen on 136, and making for a close competition with Meary Veg just 3 clays or 9 points ahead of The Ayres.

English Sporting
Once our sodden DTL and Skeet heroes had vacated the range it was time to check and adjust the sporting targets, make some last minute changes in the name of safety, and send out both Sporting squads to start from opposite ends of the range.
Nigel Moffat and John Taylor came out fighting for The Ayres on stand 1 with 8 and 7 points respectively, leading Meary Veg’s George Davis and Mark Barnett with 6. Barnett and Moffat were joined by Jack Kneen with 6 on the second stand while Taylor scored 5, providing good company for Will Rand, Marty Kneen, and Alan Brew also on 5.
Both squads battled on bravely in building winds (and liberal banter) for another four stands, which ultimately found Nigel Moffat ahead with 41 kills and 123 points, followed by Micheal Cross, Marty Kneen and John Taylor in joint second with 35 / 105. The aggregate scores provided another close competition, and this time it was The Ayres who were 3 targets / 9 points ahead of Meary Veg.

Overall
The end of the first heat found an elated Meary Veg team celebrating a narrow 99 point lead over The Ayres after a fun afternoon of testing targets and terrible weather. Our sincere thanks not only to everyone who competed in this trial-by-water, but also to those who offered their time to referee and prepare the range. Next week we’re guests at The Ayres and look forward to another exciting day’s shooting. Cheers!
